Mt. View writers in state Literature contest
03/19/2009
Mountain View and Timberline writers advance in state Literature contest: What started as a class letter writing project in Elizabeth Thiel's sixth grade class, has become a bigger deal for two talented Mountain View Elementary students. Alex Haimes and Brandy Do have been selected as semi-finalists in the Washington's Letters About Literature Awards contest, along with Timberline High School student Ashley Louch. There were more than 2,300 letters entered this year from Washington students, including 3 champion letters, 23 honorable mentions and 167 semi-finalists. The students will be invited to a special ceremony at the Capitol Rotunda in Olympia on April 3. The annual contest challenges students to write to an author and describe how his/her book affected them. It is sponsored by the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress, Washington State Library division of the Office of the Secretary State and Target Stores. For a complete list of winners and to learn more about the contest go to http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/lal.
