Mountain View Office Professional Dawn Holland received a very nice call recently from a tour guide at the State Capital where their 4th graders had visited on a field trip. The caller, former Olympia school teacher Gary Gerst, complimented the MVE students on their behavior. "He was so impressed he wanted to call and let the school know," Holland said. "He said our students were "well-mannered" "prepared," "cooperative," "inquisitive," and excellent representatives of our school. What a refreshing call to receive!!! "

Lacey Fire Dept recognized at Mt. View

Community Spotlight: Lacey Fire Department

Lacey Fire Department support NTPS: Members of the Lacey Fire Department were honored recently at an assembly by Mountain View Elementary for their heroic efforts in reviving Phillip Peck, a third grader who had collapsed on the playground. Lacey medics used a defibrillator and CPR to resuscitate the third-grader, who eventually was taken to Mary Bridge Hospital and is now back at school with a pacemaker -- and playing four square with a vengeance.

"Mountain View is such a very caring community" said Phillip's mother, Aggie Peck. "We've been to a lot of schools and this one is very personal -- like a very big family. I trust sending him to school here -- he loves it!" Phillip also loved the firefighter hat given to him by the Lacey Fire Dept. As part of the ceremony, Principal Randy Weeks also recognized the paraeducators on playground duty, Jodi Boutin, Carol Brooks and Patty Parr, for tending to Phillip and supervising the other children still at recess. Since the event, many of the staff has taken a refresher course in CPR and First Aid.

6th Grade Moving Up Celebration

PTA Meeting/Potluck BBQ - June 9th

Well, we have one final PTA meeting for the school year and we’ll combine a little bit of business, including approving next year’s budget, with a fun get-together for all of us and our families. Tara-Lyn Poole, incoming Co-VP, has again offered her home and asks for RSVP’s and some assistance with food items. So far, we have RSVP's for 20 people, including kids. Here’s her note and an updated suggestion for potluck items:

Please RSVP by June 1st to the BBQ meeting at my house on June 9th with a total number of people in your family attending, including children.

Also I need people to volunteer to bring the following items:

• Side salads
• Crackers/dip
• Any appetizers
  
• Veggie, fruit or cheese trays

I will provide the condiments - Mustard, ketchup, mayo, relish, butter etc. Paper plates, napkins & utensils, and the Ice & Ice Chest.

Volunteers recognized by NTPS

Evening with the Stars: It was a night of fun, movie trivia, prizes (donated by community businesses) and more in honor of the district's volunteers and volunteer coordinators. After members of Timberline High School's Grease cast and Choirs performed some dazzling numbers, Mistress of Ceremonies Jackie Crowley thanked all the volunteers for their service to students and schools.

Special recognition was given to the district's first Volunteer Coordinator Barb Schneider and Timberline volunteer Marcia Briskin who has volunteered for more than 26 years! Board President Aaron Owada and Board member Leah Welles also thanked Crowley for her 18 years running the program which includes volunteer services as well as business and community partnerships with the district. Special thanks to all the volunteers who helped bring the event together at the Thurston Co. Fairgrounds.

Principal Randy Weeks @ Fun Fair

Lacey Spring Fun Fair: Lacey Spring Fun Fair 2009 was a huge success and North Thurston Public Schools played a big part.

In Kids World, North Thurston Public Schools partnered with the South Sound Reading Foundation to make bookmarks and gave away more than 1,500 children's books. Dr. Koval, Asst. Supt. Shawn Lewis, and principals Randy Weeks (MV), Karen Johnson (EF), Bruce Walton (PG) and Ron Sisson (SO) also read stories to children throughout the weekend. Student art was also put on display by NTPS visual art teachers in the lobby. Thanks to all the staff and community volunteers!

Track meet kudos to Mt. View runners!

You might recognize a few names with new district records...!

Track and Field

Both elementary students and middle schoolers from around the district had the chance to enjoy the great outdoors and compete in two recent track meets organized respectively by Evergreen Forest's John Tanner and Chinook's Rich Wind.

"It's a great opportunity to highlight the value of extracurricular programs in our public schools…these programs teach important life skills including team work, integrity, respect and striving for our goals," said Wind, who has organized the middle school event for 6 years. He also invites outside districts, including Olympia and Tumwater, to participate, and this year was able to award medals made possible in part through gate donations. Students from Komachin, Nisqually and Chinook all took home some medals.

"Your team has to depend on each other more at a competitive, invitational meet like this," said Komachin 7th grader, Kathleen, who won a medal in the 4 x 100 relay hurdles.

"I think it's a nice way to honor our excellent middle school student athletes," said Komachin teacher and coach Katherine Davis . "It's also nice to see what other schools are doing and increase the competition."

Celebrating its 9th year, the two elementary meets include more than 300 5th and 6th grade student athletes from NTPS elementary schools. "We're probably nearing 5,000 kids participating over the years," Tanner said. "We have wonderful volunteers who keep coming back year after year even though their kids are in high school or college too."
